The Village of South Elgin was incorporated on April 20, 1897. Located in the picturesque Fox River Valley, the area was a natural destination for early pioneers and farmers. The community today retains a rural feel that blends perfectly with its modern residential and business developments. The Peaslee House, managed by the South Elgin Heritage Commission, maintains and displays artifacts from South Elgin’s earliest days. The historic South Elgin Cemetery provides a unique way for visitors and history buffs to look back to the town’s beginnings.
South Elgin prides itself on preserving the history of the local trolley car system, a method of transportation that was critical to the development of the town. The Fox River Trolley maintains a restored 1908 trolley car, which takes visitors on a three-mile trip along the banks of the Fox River. The annual Fox Valley Trolleyfest provides a unique opportunity for visitors to process mail at the museum’s 1891 streetcar Railway Post Office. The Fox River Folkfest in September features folk music and storytelling, which take place in a 1924 Chicago "L" car. Other events include the annual Fourth of July Parade and the South Elgin Riverfest, which is held every August. Thousands of visitors listen to live music as entertainers perform throughout the weekend event. The Riverfest showcases a car show, carnival rides, games, and trolley rides, along with the best hometown cooking anywhere. German-American heritage is celebrated each year at Fox Valley Oktoberfest with food, games and activities. This fun-filled weekend features free entertainment on the main stage, food, children’s games and activity booths. |
